What’s the old saying? Something like “attack wins games, but defense wins championships.”
We’re at the business end of the 2014 World Cup, with the quarter finals beginning tomorrow. If the old adage is true, then based on FIFA’s defense ranking perhaps things will look like this at the end of the weekend:
France (L) Germany (W)
Brazil (W) Colombia (L)
Argentina (L) Belgium (W)
Netherlands (L) Costa Rica (W)
So, we’ll see. Possible monkey wrench: the top five defending nations have all been eliminated. 1) Algeria 2) Switzerland 3) Nigeria 4) Chile 5) USA. The top-rated defensive team still in the tournament is Costa Rica. Defensive rank: 9.
